AdFreak

Hi all,
This is the link of the blog that we discussed in class today. http://adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/

AdFreak is edited by Tim Nudd, and it has six contributors in total. It is a part of Adweek, a website that contains advertising industry news. AdFreak is basically about advertising and marketing in modern society. It shows people the best and the worst of advertising.

To start our discussion, look at the posts by different contributors. Are there any differences between their writing styles? What can you tell from the ads they posted? And what do you think the name of the blog "AdFreak" implies? What do you think the blog is telling about pop culture?

  1. From they ads they posted it seems to be a lot about news today. All about the latest gadgets and a lot of news of what just what's new in the world today. They talk about celebrities and facebook and controversial ads. The conversations seem to be very engaging and interactive. People have a lot to say and they interact with each other. Some of the commentaries get pretty into it.
A lot of the ads are very strange and controversial. Probably just trying to catch the readers eye with some juicy stories about all the absurd things people are doing and selling today.

  2. I took the time to look at a few of the ads contributed by each of the writers. It looks to me, that Brian Morrissey’s posts seem the most informative. His posts are not as “controversial” as Blansh had stated, as the other’s posts. Brian’s posts center around “the best and worst”, “top 10”, and the latest in sports. Unlike his fellow contributors who center their ads on the latest technologies or crazy new products, Brian focuses his work on informing readers on the marketing aspect of the advertisements. I think this website is trying to be both informative and funny by using the wording they do in some of their posts and in choosing what to write about.

  3. I agree with Julie the blog is trying to be informative but also create something that is interesting to read. I think that they use the titles of their posts to draw in the readers and then present the facts. All of the editors I believe have their own style. My favorite is Rebecca Cullers. She does not post everyday but when she does its very interesting what kinds of articles she posts.

  4. I agree, Rebecca Cullers posts very interesting articles, and her posts not only cover the ads themselves, but also stories about certain advertisements.

Based on the comments posted by the followers, which contributor would you say the readers gravitate towards?

What about this contributor do you think causes the public to not only read put also comment on their posts?

  5. From the ads it looks to be directed at men with many sports and technology ads. I believe that the name adFreak refers to the shocking, freaky ads that are discussed. As i was flipping through i saw many names i recognized. This blog shows how pop culture is often used in ads.

  6. There are differences between almost all of the different posts made on the AdFreak site. Some of the posts are written in a very professional manner, and almost as if they were writing a report or an entry for a newspaper column.(apple) Other posts were more ‘laid back’ and seemed to be written with a more conversational feel to them. I also noticed a difference in grammatical person and the tenses that were being used. While some people used the first person approach and incorporated their own opinions in their posts (3-D/glasses) others use more of a second person approach (bud light), getting the reader more involved. I can also say that a lot of the adds that were used I haven’t really seen before. I think the people writing about these ads are not necessarily very concerned with the pop culture and what people are talking about, or the next new thing. To me it seems like they write about what they want to write about, because there are so many different types of topics and techniques used on this site. That is also where I think maybe the name of the blog comes from. They are using ads that people haven’t really seen or have been talking about, so to some people anything that is unknown or foreign to them is weird, or in this case freaky.

  7. I was drawn to Brian Morrissey's posts as I was reading through this blog. Many of the ads he brings attention to are related to sports, especially with the Superbowl being less than two weeks away. He made one post recently about the commercials that got cut from the lineup this year. I always enjoy watching these to see what the major networks deem inappropriate in today's society.

Morrissey also uses a good amount of 2nd person language which makes his posts easier to engage in and promotes reader involvement. In the ads I looked at there were often at ten or more comments.

  8. I think this cite is aimed more towards men. It's also very different from the pther blogs we've seen. this one is more involved. It seems like the contributors have a lot to say about the ads they post. Also, more people comment and there's more of a conversation. I like how they put a picture, talk about the ad, then have a video clip. I think rebecca takes the most consideration in the ads she posts. She doesn't do it everyday, but she always has a lot of info to say about each ad she does post.

  10. This blog is different from many of the other blogs we have analyzed and looked at. First off, the background and showy colors are not included in this blog. It shows that the poeple who follow this blog are actually interested in the stories not just what the blog looks like and if it is pretty or not. Also, the ads being discussed are mainly men ads or directed towards men which is very interesting becasue most of the previous blogs we looked at had certain characteristics that would bring in a feminine audience. The poeple who follow this blog like advertisements and are drawn in by the writing style of the autors and what they have to say about today's societies views on advertising.

  11. I agree with most of the class about this blog being more directed towards men. I think this tells us a lot about pop culture. It tells us that the main focus of today’s society is sports, and mostly men are interested in sports. All of the ads on the site are not about sports, but broken down into groups, there is a much higher percentage of sports commercials to any other type of commercial. It shows that right now sports are the main focus of talk, and what unites us as a society. This could also show that the gap between men and women and their interest in sports may be closing.

  12. I think this blog is very visually oriented and draws the reader to continue to look at it by the way it is set up with such large pictures above the articles.

  13. I've gone through several commercial with the articles below, finding out that Tim Nudd's articel are more like a conversation with audience and the character in the ads, and some of the commercial he uses are sensational, bloody, and concerning drug and sex. This may win him more comments.Rebecca Cullers' words are more formal and she also has a lot of great ideas.
